Running Into the New Year in North Carolina

Many people will take this opportunity at the beginning of a New Year to get a jump on searching for that new home. We think that’s pretty smart. You may find there is less competition for properties at this time while it’s a wonderful time to be looking at coastal properties in North Carolina.

If you’re planning a special trip here to investigate the coastal area of our beautiful state of North Carolina, make sure you take the time to experience some of the local events taking place as well. It’s here where you’ll get a taste of the real local flavor.

2nd Annual Beethoven 15k/5k

The 2nd Annual Beethoven 15k/5k is being held on January 25 at the Brunswick Forest Fitness Center in Leland. Whether you come to participate or come to watch, the event features unique and picturesque courses that you’re sure to enjoy. Taking place through Brunswick Forest there’s plenty of things to get excited about such as the snazzy tee-shirts, customized 15K finisher medals, and a post-race party at the Fitness Center in the Leland Room with adult beverages, good food, vendors and exhibitors!

There is also a costume awards category for athletes wearing Beethoven wigs, carrying musical instruments, or just wearing the costume of your choice so put some thought into your attire. The goal is to strike a balance between athletes looking for a serious 15K or 5K race and those looking to have a fun day and enjoy the race and post race festivities.

The event is a fundraiser for the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra and its youth education programs. This is an ideal tune-up race for late winter and early spring marathons and half marathons. Individual and 4-person team entry categories are available. The event offers 5K and 15K races, and 1K, 5K and 15K walks. Registration is $35-$50. For more info call (910) 398-5539 or (910) 791-9262.

Whistle Pig 5k and 1-Mile Race The Whistle Pig 5k and 1-Mile Race is another of the region’s premier winter races. The race starts at 9 a.m. on January 31 from the Westgate Nature Park in Leland. Bring your dog along to join the Fastest Dog Competition. This year’s race benefits Furever Friends Animal Rescue of Brunswick County, so sign up and support local animals in need of good homes!  The course is wheelchair, stroller, and dog-friendly.
