Bird Island, in Sunset Beach, NC recently made Yahoo!’s list of the world’s most unusual beaches for a good and positive reason. And it had nothing to do with the wonderful birds it inhabits. The reason it made the list was for how well preserved of an area that surround Bird Island. For those looking to purchase a summer home, a retirement villa, an investment property, or are simply looking to move to Sunset Beach, you will be glad to know just how conscientious the local residents are about their community as you learn the rest of this story.
Sunset Beach, NC real estate is very desirable and additional tax dollars are always welcome. In 1981, as the residents of Sunset Beach were discussing Bird Island’s development, a local resident staked a mailbox, with paper and pencils inside, on the 1300 acre undeveloped island, to encourage people to write why they believed the island should remain as is. Soon people filled the box stating why this glorious piece of land should be granted “reserve” status by the state. The volume of letters was persuasive enough for the government to grant the reserve status. “The Kindred Spirit Mailbox.” now receives letters from people around the world as they send positive thoughts, prayers, and encouragement, dreams, and well wishes.
In other words, you will be around people who enjoy the timeless beauty of a beach in all its natural glory, and who are not drawn to developing land for any reason.
